An appearance in ‘The Dolphin’

‘The Dolphin’ is the magazine produced by Murray Edwards College, one of the colleges of Cambridge University. Issue 57 of ‘The Dolphin’, which has just been published, celebrates the 70th anniversary of the founding of the college, which was originally called New Hall.

Prior to the publication of this edition, a call went out to women who had been members of the college over the seven decades since its foundation to contribute to the ‘Class Notes’ section of the magazine.

I was at New Hall in the late 1970s so I sent in a contribution, as follows:

You can see from this that I’ve had three main phases in my working life, the first leading on from my degree in French and Spanish and the second and third leading on from my degree in Textiles, which still continue today.

Here is my graduation photo. I look impossibly young, although I was in fact 22 at the time. I took time to travel and work abroad for a year between school and university.

It feels strange for these two parts of my life to come together in this way but it’s also fun that there is a quilter – and a quilt – alongside the other entries in ‘The Dolphin’! The quilt in the photo is ‘Winter Roses’, a quilt I designed for the magazine ‘Popular Patchwork’ and which appeared on the cover.

The photo above, of me standing in front of the quilt, was taken on the day during lockdown when I gave a talk online about quilting as one of the ‘Tricia Talks’ organised by Tricia Cusden, founder of ‘Look Fabulous Forever’. If you’d like to, you can still listen to the talk on YouTube here

I am grateful for the opportunity to study at the University of Cambridge. It was a demanding experience especially in my first year as I was studying Spanish as a new language, but I had good support from my college, New Hall (now Murray Edwards). Some of the other lessons from that time: being willing to try something new, carrying out independent research, writing clearly on several new topics every week have stood me in good stead and I use those skills today.

Happy Anniversary New Hall/Murray Edwards College!
