A block for January 2025

Hello, how are you on the day that is designated ‘Blue Monday’? If you have a touch of the post-festive blues, I have a pretty block to share with you. It is very scrap-friendly, so you can use what you have already. It’s nice and easy to to cut out and to make. So how about some sewing therapy?

Materials

To make one block you need

Fabric A – a scrap 3 x 5″ (8 x 12.5cm)

Fabric A – a scrap 3 x 5″ (8 x 12.5cm)

Fabric C – a scrap 8 x 8″ (20 x 20cm)

Fabric D – a scrap 8 x 8″ (20 x 20cm)

Machine thread for sewing

Cutting

Fabric A two pieces 2 x 2” (51 x 51mm)

Fabric B two pieces 2 x 2” (51 x 51mm)

Fabric C four pieces 3½ x 3½” (88 x 88mm)

Fabric D four pieces 3½ x 3½” (88 x 88mm)

Instructions for making the block

Use a quarter-inch (6mm) seam throughout.

1 First make the centre of the block by joining a Fabric A square to the left of a Fabric B square and press the seam allowances open.

2 Now join a Fabric B square to the left of a Fabric A square and press the seam allowances open.

3 Stitch these two pieces together, aligning the vertical seams to make a block of four. Press the seam allowances open. Set aside.

4 Join a Fabric C square to a Fabric D square and then add another Fabric C square. This is Row 1 of your block. Press the seams inwards towards the Fabric D squares.

5 Join a Fabric D square to the left of the little block of four you made in steps 1-3 and then add another Fabric D square. This is Row 2 of your block. Press the seams outwards towards the Fabric D squares.

6 Join a Fabric C square to a Fabric D square and then add another Fabric C square. This is Row 3 of your block. Press the seams towards the Fabric D squares.

7 Join Row 1 to Row 2 and finally add Row 3. Press the seams downwards.

8 Your block is complete.

This block appears in a pretty quilt called ‘Sweet Dreams’ where it is repeated across a whole row, as shown below.
