Patchwork blocks at Liberty, London

This week, I went to Liberty, the famous London store.

Those of you who read this blog regularly will perhaps remember that I made a patchwork block for ‘The Patchwork Collective’ enterprise  celebrating Liberty’s 150th anniversary (you can see the post here). And if you are a regular reader, thank you very much, your presence keeps me writing…

I had imagined that the patchwork blocks would be made into a huge quilt but not so! They have been formed into an enormous house made from just the top layer of the block, making each one semi-transparent.  I took the lift to the first floor, as indicated by the blue sign.

But the piece in fact takes up three floors!

It was wonderful to stand inside it and look up at all the squares.

This is the back of the house.

In all, 1,500 blocks were made and sent to Liberty.  Some are sewn together to make the house and the remainder are on display in beautifully designed books beneath the house. These two…

…and these three.

This is the first block in one of the books.

I loved this pretty Dresden Plate block.

This colourful block is by Marion Simpson.

I liked the use of an embroidered ‘L’ for Liberty in the hankerchief fragment incorporated into this block.

I went up a couple of floors to find my own block.

It was on a side of the roof.

You can see it  on the left-hand side, third down.

After that, I went to see the exhibition the top floor,  celebrating Liberty’s long history of fabric design.

Please note: I have not been able to source the names of the makers of the un-named single blocks featured in this post. If you made the block, please get in touch and I will credit you in the post at once!
