This is the second post about my recent visit to the Carrefour Européen de Patchwork at St-Marie-aux-Mines. You can find the first one here. I had a wonderful three days exploring the diverse selection of work on display in the various buildings in the four towns hosting the event.
Australian quilter Tara Glastonbury had an exhibition of her pieces, including ‘Blue Giant’ pictured below, which was made in 2017 when it won a first prize at QuiltCon. It is made from blue denim and hand-quilted with Sashiko thread

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Ulla Hoppe’s embroidered pieces where stitched lines appear like strokes of a black pen as in the portrait of a bear pictured below:

A very different, but again a strongly graphic piece in black and white, was the large quilt by Fabia Diniz, which references thirty different Beatles’ songs:

This detail will give you some idea of how intricate and accomplished the quilted lines were on the piece:

Perhaps my favourite area was the SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) area which was displaying the exhibition entitled ‘Blue’. Here are a few examples. The quilt below was inspired by a photograph from the 1950s:

You can see from the detail below how beautifully the different fabrics have been handled by the artist:

The intriguing quilt below positively glowed from its place on the wall:

This painterly quilt by Ethelda Ella Erasmus was a quiet, subtle piece that drew you in,

I was sad to leave this beautiful area of France:
