Platinum!

I have been teaching for a while now. In the past I worked as a Textiles teacher, for seven years in a large 11-18 comprehensive school and then for six years in an SEN setting for 16-19 year-olds. Since I started Amanda Jane Textiles in September 2014, I have taught in lots of different contexts, including at The Quilters’ Guild AGM in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Latterly, I have had the opportunity to help many individuals begin their quilting journey, with my QUILT IN A DAY course.

I used to teach this in my studio at Ushaw, when we lived in County Durham. Now I live in Kent, the course takes place in the studio we built next to the house.

Each person who comes has had a different experience of sewing in the past, so the learning goes at exactly the pace that suits them. They choose the colours they want to work with and I curate a collection of fabrics for them so they take home something they are pleased with. The course is designed to build skills as the day continues and everyone leaves with the confidence to go on to make their next quilt.

This week, I learned that I have been given a Platinum award by Craft Courses UK, who host the QUILT IN A DAY course on their platform. This is gained by receiving five-star from fifty learners. Since I teach one person at a time, this has taken me a while and I am delighted to receive it.

Next year, I will be doing fewer teaching sessions as I need to concentrate on some other areas of my work but I have just released all the available dates for 2026 on the Craft Courses website – there are 37 slots in alL for QUILT IN A DAY. There are also bookings available – on different dates – for the ‘Learn how to use a sewing machine’ half-day course.

For those who cannot travel to Ramsgate for a course, there is a good, basic online course called MAKE YOUR FIRST QUILT. You buy it, download it and follow it in your own time.

You can find links to each of these courses on the CLASSES page of the website here

You might like to do one yourself – or offer it to someone for Christmas, for a birthday or to celebrate a retirement.

Each learner is asked if they would leave a review of each course. The reviews are helpful for future learners to see if the course would be right for them. This is the most recent review from a QUILT IN A DAY learner:

“I cannot recommend this wonderful day enough! Not only is Amanda extremely knowledgeable and passionate about quilting but she is a patient and gifted teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed my day, and feel lucky to have been taught by a real expert. I also came home with a beautiful quilt! Inspirational! “
