Welcome to part 4 of the 2022 mystery quilt. The introduction to the project is here. The January block is here, the February block is here and the March block is here

This month’s block is a large star with eight points. The position of the blocks in the quilt will only be revealed at the end of the year…
To make the April block, you need to follow the instructions given in January post for making half-square triangle units. You will find this in the instructions under the heading ‘Making the Star’ in the January post here.
Materials
To make the April star, you will need:
a piece at least 12 x 12″ of Fabric A (yellow fabric with darker yellow print)
a piece at least 12 x 12″ of Fabric B (pale yellow fabric with mid-yellow print)
a piece at least 12 x 24″ of Fabric C (navy with silver stars)
Cutting
Cut four squares 5⅜ x 5⅜” from fabric A
Cut four squares 5⅜ x 5⅜” from fabric B
Cut eight squares 5⅜ x 5⅜” from fabric C
Making the Star
1 Take one square of Fabric A and place it right sides together on a square of Fabric C. Make a set of two half-square triangle units by following the instructions in the January post (link above).

2 Repeat step 1, three more times, with Fabrics A and C. You should have eight units in all.

3 Repeat step 1, four times, this time with Fabrics B and C. You should have eight units.

4 Make row one. Join a B/C square to an A/C square, then a C/B square and finally a B/C square. Make sure that the orientation of the squares is exactly as shown in the photo here (and also as shown in the photos for the following steps). Press the seams, then press the seam allowances to the right.

5 Make row two. Join a C/B square to a C/A square, then a C/A square and finally an A/C square. Press the seams, then press the seam allowances to the left.

6 Make row three. Join a C/A square to an A/C square, then an A/C square and finally a B/C square. Press the seams, then press the seam allowances to the right.

7 Make row four. Join a C/B square to a B/C square, then a C/A square and finally a C/B square.

8 Join rows one and two, making sure that the vertical seams align and that the seam allowances go in opposite directions at that point.

9 Join rows three and four in the same way.

10 Join the rows 1/2 piece to the rows 3/4 piece. Press well.

The next instalment of the ‘Watch the Stars’ mystery quilt will be on the blog on the first Monday in May.
