How to make a ‘Basket Weave’ block

This month, I am setting the block for my ‘Refuge Circle’ quilt group (read more about what this is here). I thought you might like to have the instructions so you can make some of your own.

This block is called ‘basket weave’ and it works when several of the blocks are placed next to each other, creating a woven effect across the quilt (which you can begin to see with the two blocks sewn together).

Two 'basket-weave' blocks

For the blocks to be effective you need to have one light coloured fabric, one dark-one and one mid-toned one. Here I used white, dark aqua and mid-tone green

Cutting  For each block, cut four strips 1½ x 3½” of each of three colours: A mid-tone, B dark-tone and C light tone.

Method

1 Lay the strips out as shown.

2 Join the strips in each quarter of the block. NB each of the ‘quarters’ is made the same way (light + dark + medium tone).

3 Arrange the quarters as shown. The quarter on the top left is not rotatated. The quarter on the top right is rotated 90 degrees clockwise; the quarter on the bottom right is rotated 180 degrees clockwise and the quarter on the bottom left is rotated 270 degrees clockwise.

4 Join quarter 1 to 2 and then join quarter 3 to 4. Join the rows.

Have fun with your Basket Weave blocks!
