Book Recommendations

Each month, at around this time in the month, I write a newsletter to all my newsletter subscribers. There is lots of enjoy in each newsletter. For example, I include a ‘Colour Inspiration’ photo (I wrote about this in a blog post here).

There is also a photo in each newsletter with some ‘Design Inspiration’ (I wrote about that here)

I also include some news about what I’ve been doing in the studio – and, in fact, outside it. (I mentioned this in a blog post here

Since I started writing the newsletter I have also always included a book recommendation – about textiles, of course. In 2024, the book recommendations have been a little different. Each month I am suggesting a book to read in your spare time which has a textiles theme. So this year, they are not books to learn some new quilting technique. It’s purely for enjoyment (although of course you may learn something new anyway). You should be able to find these books in second-hand shops or from your local library.  (This is NOT an affiliate link!)

This month I am recommending ‘The Seamstress of Sardinia’ by Bianca Pitzorno, translated by Brigid Maher published by Text Publishing, Australia in 2022. This is a fictional narrative, formed from a number of interconecting stories, with a young seamstress (‘sartina’ in Italian) who worked in the houses of bourgeois families in the early twentieth century.  The stories are well told and the details of the garments and linens being sewn are really engaging.
