Lovely Sawtooth Star blocks

Today I have been finishing off a set of Sawtooth Star blocks for my charity quilt group ‘Refuge Circle’, one of the “do. Good Stitches” groups organised by quilter Rachel Hauser of ‘Stitched in Colour’ (https://www.stitchedincolor.com). Carola, our leader for November asked us to make six Sawtooth Star blocks and she directed us to an excellent tutorial by Brittany Lloyd on how to make the block which comes from ‘Lo & Behold Stitchery’ who are based in Black Mountain, North Carolina. You can find a link to the tutorial at the end of this post.

The Sawtooth Star block is one I have made several times before but this particular one-page tutorial has you making some parts of your block slightly bigger than necessary, so that you can trim it down to the exact size needed for your block. I found that it worked brilliantly and enabled me to produce really accurate eight-and-a-half inch square blocks that will be eight inches finished in the completed quilt from our group. The quilt will be given to a charity to distribute to a young person in need.

I began by cutting out all the shapes to the exact measurements specified. These are the fabrics for the star shapes.

And here are the ones for the backgrounds.

You can see how the two sets of fabrics work together below.

Each of the flying geese units were trimmed as specified in the tutorial – you can see the little off-cuts below.

Here are the trimmed flying geese units, all twenty-four of them. My flying geese have never been so neat!

Here are my six finished blocks, all ready to send to this month’s Quilter.

There is still time to make a Thanksgiving table-runner (or wall-hanging) before the celebrations begin in the US. (If you live in Canada), you could start making yours for next year!) The pattern is here
