The Liberty company was established in 1875, so this year celebrates its 150th anniversary. To mark this special occasion, Liberty is inviting ‘artisans, makers, designers and visionaries’ to collaborate in creating a super-sized patchwork quilt, comprised of hundreds of individual pieces. I consider that I fit into several of those categories so I applied to take part and have made my block. It is a 25 x 25cm square with a 5cm seam allowance round, making it 28 x 28cm unfinished. At least 60% of the fabrics need to be Liberty. I have a good collection of Liberty lawn and so my piece is 100% Liberty.
All the blocks need to arrive with Liberty by 21st February 2025. The quilt will be shown in the London store (seen below) in May and will later go into the Liberty Archive.
Along with the instructions for the materials and block size, Liberty also provided very clear instructions for several patchwork blocks which could be used, including the Ohio Star which is one of my favourites.
I used Ohio Stars (on point) in this quilt that I designed some years ago for Popular Patchwork magazine. It’s still one of my favourite quilts and I love the Ohio Star block so that’s the one I picked (see Press page here to see the magazine cover.
From my collection of Liberty print fabrics, I chose these two for my block:

As this coordinating fabric picks up some of the neutral tones in both fabrics, I picked it for the sashing strips round the block.

So here’s the block.

I will put it in the post tomorrow – in good time for the deadline. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished quilt!
