A long goodbye

'Happy Scrappy Squares' quilt pattern by Amanda Jane Ogden in 'Make Modern' magazine issue 47 page 13

At the end of last month the online Australian quilting magazine ‘Make Modern’ announced that they would be ceasing to publish the magazine at the end of 2026. This is how they made their public announcement:

After more than a decade of sharing quilty inspiration in our pages, Issue 73 (Nov/Dec 2026) will be our final issue. Our team have done lots of talking and planning (and a little crying!) and it’s a big decision but we think it’s the right time for us to close this beautiful chapter. That makes this year our final year. But we’re not just going to fade out quietly! Our final year will be full of colour, creativity, and of course, LOTS of beautiful quilts … a celebration of our wonderful magazine and the people that have helped us put it all together over the past twelve years. We know this might come as a bit of a surprise after all these years … it wasn’t an easy decision! We are grateful to have you here as one of our supporters and want to be transparent about the future of the magazine.

I have been a contributor to Make Modern several times over the last few years. The most recent quilt is in the current issue (Issue 69) and the quilt is called ‘Love Grows’. I wrote about it briefly here

First of all there was ‘Happy Scrappy Squares’ which appeared in issue 47:

Issue 49 included my quilt ‘Onwards and Upwards’ (photographed in Ramsgate Harbour):

I designed and made ‘Rainbow Ladder’ for issue 52:

My improv quilt ‘Tracks in the Meadow’ was in issue 54:

I am also contracted to design and make a quilt for ‘Make Modern’ which will appear later this year – I’ll be sharing that with you in due course.

It will be sad to say goodbye to ‘Make Modern’ – this will be a loss to the quilting community and to me personally. The ‘Make Modern’ team have been really good to work with. There is a wealth of information and inspiration in each of the editions of the magazine, which are all available digitally. Something you might like to consider at this point is purchasing their All-Access Pass, which will include all the above patterns and hundreds more. As Make Modern explains:

With our All-Access Pass, you’ll unlock every single issue of ‘Make Modern’ – that’ll be 73 issues and over 700 patterns – plus expert tips, interviews, and patterns galore … all at the click of a button. You’ve spent years building a fabric stash. Think of this as building the pattern stash to match it!
