Summer is a time for getting out and about and perhaps even going away, so this week my mind is turning to useful bags. Pictured below is the ever-handy drawstring bag. I made mine up with my own fabric ‘Farne Islands’. When we lived in the North-East of England we took a boat trip round the Farne Islands and saw puffins and seals on the rocks, small boats going by and lighthouses providing a warning of rocky shores – and there they all are in the fabric. You can buy the fabric from my studio on Spoonflower by clicking the link here The link to the free instructions on this website for how to make the bag is here I use this as a shoe-bag when I pack to go away, which stops the soles of your (sandy?) shoes dirtying your garments.

If we are taking bulky bedding with us when we go to stay away, I always use the large bag I made from canvas fabric with the ‘Midnight Ferns’ fabric, available here

There is an inexpensive pattern available for you to make a really large and sturdy bag, as seen below. Get the pattern here

The last bag is also made from one of my fabrics ‘The work of my hands’, because it shows my two hands on my work-table which is covered with the tools of my trade: sewing things, art supplies and so on. Here is the design below. Get the fabric here
A friend very kindly made a skirt for me from this fabric and I wore it for several years:

And now I have upcycled the skirt to make a bag and it has a whole new life!

So if the weather is warm where you are, why not make a bag? There are several othe bag patterns in the Etsy shop right here
