‘Watch the Stars’ mystery quilt – July block

Welcome to the July block for the ‘Watch the Stars’ 2022 mystery quilt.

To make the July block, you need to follow the instructions given in January post for making half-square triangle units. You will find this in the instructions under the heading ‘Making the Star’ in the January post here.

A quarter-inch seam is used throughout.

Materials

3 x 3″ white fabric

6 x 18″ light yellow/white print fabric

6 x 12″ yellow solid fabric

10 x 19″ navy blue fabric with silver print

Cutting

from the white fabric, cut one square 2½ x 2½”

from the light yellow/white print fabric, cut four squares each 2⅞ x 2⅞” and four squares 2½ x 2½”

from the yellow solid fabric, cut eight squares each 2⅞ x 2⅞”

from the navy blue fabric, cut two strips each 10½ x 1½”, cut two strips each 12½ x 1½”and eight squares each 2⅞ x 2⅞”

Making the Block

1 Check the January post (link above) for how to make half-square triangles. Use two 2⅞ x 2⅞” pale yellow/white print squares and two 2⅞ x 2⅞” navy squares to make four half-square triangle units like the ones below. Press the seam and then press the seam allowances over to the navy blue side.

2 Use six 2⅞ x 2⅞” solid yellow squares and six 2⅞ x 2⅞” navy squares to make twelve half-square triangle units like the ones below. Press the seam and then press the seam allowances over to the navy blue side.

3 Use two 2⅞ x 2⅞” pale yellow/white print squares and two 2⅞ x 2⅞” mid-yellow squares to make four half-square triangle units like the ones below. Press the seam and then press the seam allowances over to the mid-yellow side.

4 Make row 1. Join five half-square triangle units, as shown in the photo below: navy/light yellow; solid yellow/navy; solid yellow/ navy; solid yellow/navy; light yellow/navy. Press the seam, then press the seam allowances to the right.

5 Make row 2. Join two half-square triangle units, as shown in the photo below: solid yellow/navy; light yellow/solid yellow, then add a 2½ x 2½” square; continue with two more half-square triangle units: a solid yellow/yellow print and finally a navy/yellow solid. Press the seam, then press the seam allowances to the left.

6 Make row 3. Join a navy/yellow solid unit to a 2½ x 2½” yellow print square, then a white 2½ x 2½”, next another 2½ x 2½” yellow print square, finally a yellow solid/navy half-square triangle unit. Press the seams, then press the seam allowances to the right.

7 Make row 4. Repeat the instructions for row 2 but this time press the seam allowances to the right. Take the finished strip and turn it through 180 degrees.

8 Make row 5. Repeat the instructions for row 1 but this time press the seam allowances to the left. Take the finished strip and turn it through 180 degrees.

9 Pin row 1 to row 2, aligning the vertical seams and ensuring that the seam allowances are facing in opposite directions and those points. Join row 3, row 4 and row 5 in the same way.

10 Join a navy 10½ x 1½” strip to each side of the patchwork. Press the seam allowances outwards. Join a navy 12½ x 1½” strip to each side of the patchwork. Press the seam allowances outwards.

Press well and set aside.
