Last month I went to the Dragonfly Quilters’ Exhibition in St George’s Hall, High Street, Kent. This was a show full of colourful and beautifully executed work. Here are some of my favourite pieces.
This quilt ‘Surrounded by Stars’ by Liz Newington was hand-pieced from fabrics donated by family and friends and machine-quilted. So eye-catching!

‘Mabel’s Quilt’ by Sandra James (adapted from Susan Smith’s ‘My Family Quilt’) is so pretty: the combination of pastel colours and the pretty hearts added by the maker make for such an attractive quilt.

‘Delilah Quilt’ by Stephanie Syvret. from a pattern by Jen Kingswell, also uses a variety of blocks. This time the colours and patterns are vibrant, making it an interesting and attractive piece.

I also enjoyed the soft tones of the squares of tweed and suiting fabric in this quilt by Liz Newington, called ‘A Tonne of Sausages’.

You needed to look close to see the many machine-embroidered sausage dogs!

There was a display of log-cabin quilts made by the group, hung informally along one wall.

This group of quilters is very active in the production of small quilts for the local Special Care Baby Unit. You can see examples of their work in the next two photos. If you have read this blog before, you will know that this is a cause close to my heart (see the posts here and here; see the post here if you want to make some small quilts yourself).
This quilt, ‘Modern Grey’ by Di Hawkins, was made from a pattern by Jackie White in ‘Make Modern’ magazine*. I loved the effect created by the textural quality of the background fabric in contrast to the modern prints in the pieced shapes.

Because of the pandemic, it is four years since Dragonfly Quilters had their last show. Usually, they exhibit every two years over the late August Bank Holiday weekend, so that’s a definite date for the diary: August 2025. See the next show if you can!
