This month’s book recommendation is for ‘100 Modern Quilt Blocks’, subtitled ‘Tula Pink’s City Sampler’, published by David & Charles. The book is written by fabric designer Tula Pink and each block features fabrics from her many collections.

As the title suggests, one hundred modern-looking blocks are presented with cutting instructions for the pieces needed to make the block. Here is an example:

On the facing page (of each block diagram), there is a photograph of the block made up in a mixture of Tula Pink’s own fabrics and coordinating solids. Here is the page for the block above:

You will see that I have added a date to the page in my copy of the book. This is because I used it for a ‘100 day project’ on Instagram in 2016.
I entered the quilt in the Modern quilt category in 2017 (see the post here). Here is the quilt on display:

This quilt also appears in the Tutorial ‘How to layer up a big quilt’ which you can find here
The book also includes several helpful lay-outs for quilts made from the blocks in the book, An example of one of these is given below:

However, the book is a great resource to dip in to, for introducing modern elements to your quilt. Any one of the one hundred blocks could be used in different sizes in a Modern quilt. Another feature of the book is of course the combinations of colours that Tula Pink does so well: you could use the photographs to prompt you to try colour mixes that you have never used before. Finally, you can take pleasure in examining the delicious fabric designs featured in the life-size photos of each block (as seen in the third photo above). So all in all, a highly recommended book!
