“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
The quotation above is the inspiration for a mystery quilt entitled ‘Watch the Stars’ which I will be revealing to you throughout this coming year.
Writing to you right at the beginning of 2022, this centuries-old quotation seems (curiously) to be so appropriate. In the UK, we are experiencing very high levels of infection of Covid-19, so various activities need to be curtailed. I like the idea of dwelling on the ‘beauty of life’ in these circumstances. Many things that spark pleasure, joy and contentment can be found in everyday life just as it is, right now. In addition, sewing is so useful, as a distraction, as a means of occupying one’s time, using one’s hands and of making something of beauty.
Here in Ramsgate, there were fireworks at mid-night on 31st December to celebrate the new year. The sky was bright and clear, studded with stars. It looked so beautiful, as we walked down to the sea-front to see the firework display. This isn’t the easiest to photograph, but the picture below, taken from the Westcliff in Ramsgate of fireworks over on the Eastcliff will give you some idea of what we saw.

It’s easier to depict fireworks on a fabric design, so here’s my ‘Fireworks in the Alps’ fabric!

So… more about the new project. Starting next Monday, 10th January 2022, right here on the blog, there will be instructions for making the first stage of a mystery quilt. Each month after that, I will show you how to make the next stage. At the end of the year, you will find out how the whole lot fits together. It’ll be fun!
I promise you stars. You will be learning to make lots of stars!
Happy New Year!
