‘Watch the Stars’ mystery quilt – October block

This blog post is landing rather late this Monday, because I have been busy preparing for my classes at The Knitting and Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace. (For full details of the classes and for a discount code on your entry ticket, see the blog post here.)

Welcome to the October block for the ‘Watch the Stars’ 2022 mystery quilt.

Watch-the-Stars Mystery Quilt 2022 with Amanda Jane Textiles, white lettering on a dark blue background, four yellow on blue star blocks at the bottom

Here are the October block instructions. Full instructions for assembling the quilt will come at the end of the year.

A quarter-inch seam is used throughout.

Materials

You will need:

6 x 4″ white solid fabric

12 x 8″ dark yellow print fabric

18 x 7″ pale yellow print fabric

14 x 13″ navy blue print fabric

Cutting

from the white fabric, cut two squares, each 2⅞ x 2⅞”

from the dark yellow print fabric, cut eight squares 2⅞ x 2⅞”

from the pale yellow print fabric, cut two squares 2⅞ x 2⅞”

from the navy print fabric cut four squares each 2⅞ x 2⅞” and four squares 2½” x 2½””

Cut the half-oblongs carefully as follows:

from the navy print fabric, cut four oblongs 5¼ x 2¾”   then cut two of the oblongs from the top right-hand corner to the bottom left-hand corner, as shown.

This yields four half-oblong triangles with a right angle on the left.

then cut the remaining two oblongs from the the top left corner to the bottom right corner, as shown. This yields four half-oblong triangles with a right angle on the right.

Making the block

To make the October block, you need to follow the instructions given in January post for making half-square triangle units. You will find this in the instructions under the heading ‘Making the Star’ in the January post here.

1 Take a 2⅞ x 2⅞” square of white solid fabric and a 2⅞ x 2⅞” of dark yellow print fabric. Follow the instructions in the January post (link above) for making half-square triangle units to make two white/dark yellow units.

2 Repeat step 1 to make two more white/dark yellow units.

3 Take a 2⅞ x 2⅞” square of pale yellow print fabric and a 2⅞ x 2⅞” square of dark yellow fabric and make two pale yellow/dark yellow half-square triangle units.

4 Repeat step 3 to make two more pale yellow/dark yellow units.

5 Take a 2⅞ x 2⅞” square of dark yellow print fabric and a 2⅞ x 2⅞” square of navy fabric and make two dark yellow/navy half-square triangle units.

6 Repeat step 5 three more times to make six more dark yellow/navy units

7 Pin a navy ‘left-hand’ half-oblong triangle to a pale yellow ‘left-hand’ half-oblong triangle, as shown.

Stitch, open and press.

8 Pin a navy ‘right-hand’ half-oblong triangle to a pale yellow ‘right-hand’ half-oblong triangle, as shown.

Stitch, open and press.

9 Repeat steps 7 – 8 three more times.

10 Make up a quarter of the block. Join a navy print 2½ x 2½” square to the left of one of the units made in step 5.

11 Join the second unit made in step 5 to the left of a unit made in step 3.

12 Join the piece made in step 10 to the piece made in step 11.

13 Join a ‘right hand’ half oblong unit to the right of the piece completed in step 12.

14 Join a piece made in step 1 to the right of a ‘left-hand’ half-oblong unit.

15 Join the piece made in step 13 above the one made in step 14.

16 Repeat steps 10-15 three more times.

17 Join the quarter blocks together, with the white triangles in the centre.

Press the block and keep it safe.
